How I Keep My Converse White
I always thought Converse were too cool for me and I wasn’t cool enough to wear a pair. But a few years ago I decided I didn’t care if I felt like I people would think I wasn’t cool enough to wear them because I wanted to incorporate a pair into my wardrobe so badly that I was going to rock it regardless. And I am so glad I did. They have easily become my favorite pair of tennis shoes to wear and make any outfit seem cool and casual. I even wore them as my reception shoes for our wedding.
I often am asked how I keep my converse white after repeated wear, so today I thought I’d share my go to stain remover (my laundry secret weapon) and how I treat the stains to keep my converse a bright white. I’ve owned the pair I have now for almost two years and pending any future heinous stains I don’t foresee purchasing a new pair any time soon.
Supplies:
Dirty Converse
An old toothbrush
Work space
Delicates bag
Steps:
Remove the laces and spray the dark spots with Grandma’s spray and scrub with the old tooth brush. Place treated shoe laces in a delicates bag.
Spray Grandma’s spray on the stains on the shoes and scrub with the old tooth brush. This includes both the canvas parts of the shoe and the rubber sole.
Put delicates bag and shoes in washing machine with a small amount of laundry detergent and a small scoop of OxyClean.
Wash on regular or standard with warm water. If the noise bothers you throw in a few white towels to keep the noise down. I usually use our old towels we keep around to clean up after the dog.
Let all items air dry. I hang the shoe laces and place my converse in a well ventilated area with the tongue of the shoe pulled forward toward the toe to allow for the inside to dry properly.
It takes about two full days for the shoes to dry, but the results are totally worth it. If you don’t already own Grandma’s Secret Spot Remover, it is a must for your laundry room. I used it on a silk scarf recently and had no issue with it harming the fabric and he stain is completely gone.
(Editor’s note: While writing this post, I saw they have a sneaker cleaner specific cleaning spray. I’ve never used it before, but I would assume it is magic based on the results I’ve had using the general stain remover.)
xx,
Linds
