Mind Mapping Hair Care with Erin Stewart

Last month, I participated in my first IG Live with Erin Stewart, and it was so much fun! We chatted about all things hair care - loving your stylist, brushing your hair, taking care of your hair while you sleep, middle vs. side parts and so much more. You can catch the recap here. Erin is a dear friend of mine and specializes in the Art of Inquiry.

This idea originated during a text conversation where I was saying how 2020 was the year of skincare and how I wanted to make 2021 the year of hair care. She texted back “hair inquiry.” From there the idea was born that she would help me mind map my hair care journey because as you can tell from the IG Live there are so many areas of hair care. It can be a bit overwhelming. We wanted to get all of my thoughts down on paper, then determine an area to dive into first.

This deep dive into hair care was a personal inquiry. Haircare has become a new interest of mine, and I hope to find more joy when it comes to my hair through this inquiry. So get prepared for a lot of trial and error as I travel down the road of upgrading my hair care regime. Also, I started a shared hair care Pinterest board with Erin if you want to follow along with our journey.

so first, what is mind mapping?

Mind mapping is a graphical way to represent ideas, concepts, or areas of interest. It’s a visual tool to structure information in a way that better helps you analyze, narrow down, generate, connect, and/or recall ideas, concepts, or areas of interest. It’s supposed to be messy, and as Erin often reminds me “let it be messy.”

I did clean mine up a bit afterward, so my type-A self could see everything a bit better. To the right, you can see the thoughts and ideas we discussed in the hour we were on IG Live together. I know that as I dive into this each subcategory will grow into its own mind map.

what are my initial learnings from mind mapping hair care with Erin?

First, hair is deeply personal. We all have our woes with our hair, and what applies to one person does not always translate to the next. And one person’s dislike with their hair might be another’s hopes and dreams. It’s important to recognize the importance of hair and how it makes us feel, what about we love, and how to embrace

Second, it’s important to develop a “library” of trusted people or experts. In this case, your stylist or a beauty blogger/Instagrammer with a similar hair texture to you. Ask them questions to help guide you to find answers.

Third, there are so many different ways to approach the hair care journey. I mean just look at the list I created. And it’s important to narrow it down and start small. Overall, this can be very overwhelming, but if you choose a subtype and work from there you can chip away at your inquiry without the overwhelm. And when you feel uninspired or done with one area, return to your mind map for more ideas.

where will I begin with my hair care journey?

xx,

Linds
