My Go-To Dressy Winter Coat
Recently, I’ve received a handful of questions regarding the J.Crew City Coat. You’ll see me wearing it a lot around here as I’ve not really invested in a legit puffy winter coat yet (maybe one day), and it is one of my favorite fall/winter coats I own as it elevates everything you pair it with. I feel like the cut is classic and will be in style for seasons to come.
How is the quality?
This will be the third season I’ve owned my city coat and I feel as if it has held up very well. With wear comes some pilling in the areas that experience friction similar to any sweater you might wear. This is nothing 30 minutes and a pill remover cannot fix. The weight feels substantial and I love the reversible high quality zipper.
What’s your temperature threshold?
As I mentioned above, I have yet to invest in a true winter coat (I think part of me doesn’t want to admit to myself that I live somewhere that cold), so this is the coat I wear when leaving the house to head to work, or out on dates, or to the grocery store. Unless we are going to play in the snow, this is the coat I choose day in and day out. I wore this coat the other day with a sweater and a scarf on a 34 degree morning and felt plenty warm for the 5-10 minute walk to my office.
What size did you get?
My coat is a size six. I could have fit into a four, but that left little room for sweaters or scarves. I wanted my coat to have a bit more space and movement to it. The six provides plenty of room for layers and allows my arms to move a bit more freely. For reference, I have pretty broad shoulders (My shoulders are broad enough that I’ve been mistaken for a swimmer. Person: “Did you swim in college?” Me: “No, why?” Person: “You have broad shoulders.”) and I’m 5’9” and weigh around 150lbs (give or take a few holiday treats).
What items can you pair with it?
I pretty much wear mine everywhere and to anything, but my favorite combo with this coat is skinny jeans, a sweater or flannel and booties (as seen in these photos). I’ve worn this coat with tights, booties and a sweater dress. And because I live in a place where it is acceptable to wear whatever where ever I have also worn it over workout gear to the grocery store. This coat is a classic enough shape and cut that you can wear it with a causal outfit or a dressy outfit and still look chic.
What color do you recommend?
Personally, I love the heather mushroom color and would recommend it to everyone. Camel colored coats will NEVER go out of style and are a refreshing color to see in a sea of black winter coats. I feel like I never question if the heather mushroom color goes with what I have on. If you’re looking for a nicer winter coat I’d suggest a neutral - heather graphite, black or heather mushroom. But if you already have a neutral winter coat go for the color girlfriend. I have my eye on the deep emerald.
Also, I bought mine three seasons ago when it wasn’t on sale. I paid full price and honestly, I’m not even mad about it because I have worn this coat enough times that it was worth it. But get it while you can on sale!

Linds
