Friday Favorites: Podcasts
Before traveling I always get my in-flight entertainment prepped - download podcasts, order a book from Amazon, etc. Airport book stores are always so expensive and nothing can be worse when you are immersed in a podcast and switch to airplane mode only to realize you forgot to download it.
Before I fly from the east coast to the west coast next week, I wanted to share to my favorite podcasts to listen to and a couple of TBH (to be heard list - I just made this up based on TBR - to be read). You’ll see (like my reading) there is sort of a theme - thriller, a murder mystery with some educational options thrown in there as well.
favorite podcasts
Behind the Bastards
Behind the Bastards deep dives into the lives of the worst humans in history. Host Robert Evans sits down with a guest to discuss the bad guys and gals of history. The guests have no idea who they are discussing and help add a bit of lighthearted commentary to an otherwise awful topic. In 2019, Behind the Bastards has released two episodes on Alfred Hitchcock and three on Mark Zuckerburg which I think will get me through my 7 hour travel day to California.
Up and Vanished
I cannot get enough of this podcast. Both season one and season two were amazing and I binged them as quickly as I could. Both seasons take look at missing person cases - Tara Grinstead in Georgia and Kristal Reisinger in Colorado - and dig deep into the community dealing with the tragedy. If you haven’t listened, season one ends as you’d never expect.
Accused
I devoured season one of Accused. Set in Oxford, Ohio, this mystery hit really close to home as I have friends who attended Miami University and it is a rival of Ohio. In season one, the Cincinnati Inquirer details the unsolved mystery of Elizabeth Andes in 1978. The podcast takes a look back at who Elizabeth was close with at the time and revisits many interviews from the time after her murder. This podcast particularly intrigued me because someone who knew Elizabeth and was very much around during police investigation currently lives where I live.
Slow Burn
Hosted by Leon Neyfakh, Slow Burn takes a look at what it was like to live through politically tumultuous times that is not too far off from our current political landscape. Season one covers Watergate and season two covers Clinton’s impeachment. I’m about partway through season one and I’ve enjoyed getting to revisit this moment in American history that, to be honest, I wasn’t super familiar with the details.
Stuff Mom Never Told You
This podcast is hit or miss with me depending on the topic. I find it really hard to stay up-to-date on the crazy things - political, environmental, social, etc. - occurring in our world, and this podcast helps me stay a bit more up-to-date and informed. Topics covered range from “Where are the Pockets on Women’s Pants?” to “Much Ado About Burnout” to “A Lot of Women are Having Bad Sex.” I really enjoy the wide range of topics this podcast covers.
Bossed Up
I started following this podcast when Emilie Aries left Stuff Mom Never Told You to start her company Bossed Up. I attended a Bossed Up Conference in September of last year and left feeling more inspired than I had in a really, really long time. Emilie talks about a ton of topics to help her listeners become better professionals, more financially stable or aware, or how to handle tricky situations at work. I am a part of a Bossed Up forum, and let me tell you the advice this community brings to the table is priceless.

Sleuth
Sleuth follows the trial of Rachel Buffett, ex-fiance to Daniel Wozniak, who is accused of being an accessory to two murders Daniel committed in the attic of a theater where he performed. I’ve seen a Discovery ID episode about this murder, so I’m interested to learn more about the crime and how Daniel’s Ex-fiance, Rachel, might be involved.
Missing Maura Murray
Maura Murray was a 21-year-old college student when she drove three hours from her dorm in Amherst, Massachusetts to the White Mountains of New Hampshire and vanished. She was involved in a one-car, non-life-threatening car crash and vanished within ten minutes before the police arrived. Two filmmakers set out to find answers to this mystery and dive deep into Maura’s life. This podcast is right up my alley of mysterious disappearances and crimes.
