Belizean Honeymoon Part 2

For the second part of our honeymoon, Brian and I spent 4 1/2 days/4 nights in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. From the Cayo District, we took a private shuttle with Belize Shuttles (I forgot to mention this in Part One, but we used Belize Shuttles to get us from Belize City to San Ignacio). We had the same driver both ways for the 1.5-hour trip. He was so knowledgeable about Belize, their tourism, the landscape, and the towns we passed through.

The shuttle dropped us off at the Belize Water Taxi terminal where we took an hour boat ride with a lot of people to San Pedro. We actually met a few people we became vacation friends with on the boat, but I would recommend flying instead of the water taxi. the boats run a bit more on island time and aren't the most organized. But if your travel time is a bit flexible, the water taxi is a great way to save money.

Where to Stay

We spent the second part of our trip at Victoria House. And let me tell you this place is beautiful. Just absolutely beautiful. Prior to our trip, we finished the final season of Bloodline and definitely felt like we had just walked on the set. It has Rayburn House vibes.

The staff here is nothing short of amazing. We were constantly being checked on but in a non-intrusive annoying way. We felt incredibly taken care of at this resort and fancier than we are in real life. Each morning the staff gathers for a meeting to discuss the guests - who they are, what they are celebrating, where they are from, etc. This sounds a bit creepy, but it honestly set the customer service bar high. Every staff member knew our names, what room we were in, that we were on our honeymoon, and what we had scheduled for the day.

What to Do

While in San Pedro, Brian and I wanted to take it easy since we were going, going, going during the first half. We spent our first day here relaxing on the beach and drinking fancy cocktails. We wanted to enjoy our time together and not feel like we were rushing from one excursion to the next.

The only excursion we schedule while on Ambergris Caye was a snorkeling trip to the Hol Chan Reserve and Shark Alley. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of open water, but once I got over my minor fear this was such a cool experience. You can see 99% of Caribbean marine life in the Hol Chan reserve. We swam with giant stingrays, nurse sharks, sea turtles and barracudas to name a few. I highly recommend it if you are not a scuba diver.

On our last full day, we rode bikes from the resort into town to explore. We didn't do anything too fancy, but we ate local food, paletas, shopped, etc. We spent the latter half of the day cooling off in the resort pool. I'm sure there are ton of fun things to do on the Caye, but we wanted to take some time to relax before heading back to our daily life.

Where to Eat

Papuseria

This place was by far our favorite. We asked one of the waiters at Victoria House his favorite restaurant in town and his eyes lit up when he told us about the Papuseria. We knew from that moment, we had to try it. At $2.50 Belizean per papusa, you are guaranteed to be stuffed for cheap by the time dinner ends. We came back here for snacks and dinner during our 4 days because we couldn't get enough.

Las Paletas

We stopped here one day on our way back to the resort. The paletas were full of flavor and just what we needed to cool off on a hot Belizean summer day. This place had so many flavors available we could have stopped here two or three times a day and not tasted everything before the end of our trip. Paletas are not just popsicles. They are fresh fruit (juice or chucks) and sometimes cream frozen on a stick. You will get so much flavor with these you'll turn your nose up toward regular popsicles.

What I love about this place it is owned by a local 28-year-old female entrepreneur.

Hungry Grouper

Brian and I decided to try this place for dinner one night on the recommendation of our taxi driver. It's a small dining room with sand floors, but the staff makes you feel like family. The cook and host both came out to chat with us a handful of times about the food and our travels. I cannot remember what we ate, but I do remember Brian and I both cleaned our plates. This place is cash only, so be sure stop by an ATM prior to your arrival.

Robin's Kitchen

This place was a short walk from our resort and just the local fair we were looking for on our trip. Dishes have a Jamaican flair to them and are absolutely delicious. Robin's is super casual and made for people watching with it being so close to the main road to many of the resorts. I highly recommend the jerk chicken. And as I write this, I see they have breakfast tacos as well which makes my little Texas heartbreak that we didn't try them. For those of drinking age, you can walk next door to the market and pick up a couple beers to enjoy over your meal.

We couldn't have picked a better place than Belize for our honeymoon. The adventures, the food, and the people were amazing. It is an amazing country that is worth adding to your shortlist travel destinations.
