Defining Your Style

In my How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe post, I shared a few questions to ask yourself while evaluating your “love” pile to help you define your style. To be completely transparent, I wanted to share mine here on Just X’s And O’s to help guide those who might be struggling to start a capsule.

What colors, prints, textures do you gravitate towards?

  • Colors: black, grey, white, blues - mostly denim and chambray, beige and camel with olive green as a color option. I’m hoping to include a second or third color option (remember I said no hard and fast rules).

  • Prints: leopard (sorry y’all, but it is a neutral. Argue, but you’re wrong), stripes (black and white, blue and white) and one polka dot skirt I absolutely adore.

  • Textures: Denim, cashmere, chambray, wool, leather, and cotton.

Does your love pile represent your lifestyle?

  • What is the dress code at your place of work? My office is business casual, and I would say I dress casual business. Jeans are allowed on Fridays, but the other four days denim has to stay at home. My wardrobe could use a few more pieces that would make it a bit easier to dress Monday - Thursday.

  • How active are you? I fall on the more active side. Walks with Uly are a daily occurrence in our family, I try to use my standing desk regularly, and I try to take the stairs as much as possible. I try to make time for the gym or gym-like activities every other day or so.

  • What do you need to wear to accomplish your day-to-day activities? I need to wear something I can move in and something that is not too fussy. I need to be able to look presentable at work, walk my dog and go out with friends or meet Brian for dinner in relatively the same ensemble. I tend to be cold more often than not so a scarf or cardigan or light jacket are a plus.

  • What activities fill your weekend? My weekends are filled with running errands, going to football games, spending time with friends, hiking, going to the dog park, and lounging around. I need clothes that can move with me and are okay if they get a little dirty.

Write down the descriptive words that come to mind when reviewing your “love” pile.

  • Comfort

  • Versatile

  • Casual

  • Neutral

  • Effortless

  • Cool

Do your research and create a vision board.

I created a Pinterest board: Fall 18 Capsule Inspo, and I started to see my preferred style even more clearly. Also, I took a look at my inspiration board to see what items I already had in my closet and what items I was missing. With this information, I began to make a list of holes in my wardrobe (I will share this list soon and where I am considering purchasing these items).

I hope this helps guide you to limit the items in your closet to only the items you truly love. If you have questions or need help with a decision, please do not hesitate to drop me a note.

Xx,

Linds
